Sony plans animated feature for the famed sailorman.

Sony is working up a CGI Popeye movie — which will be made in 3D. Of course.

According to Variety, former Marvel boss Avi Arad will produce the film. Arad jetted from Marvel back in 2006 to make his own movies. And now he’s making… Popeye cartoons.

Mike Jones, an ex-Variety scribe, is in negotiations to write the film, which will bring the legendary sailorman back to the big screen for the first time since the supremely weird if underrated 1980 live-action picture which starred Robin Williams and was directed by Robert Altman.

Popeye’s first appearance in the funny pages, circa 1929.

Interestingly, Variety compares the new film to Sony’s Smurfs project. The latter picture will feature a mix of CGI and live-action actors, so could it be that this new Popeye will follow a similar route ala Alvin and the Chipmunks?

No word yet on the plot of the film, but we do know it will include Olive Oyl, Bluto and Swee’Pea and, according to Arad, “will cover the themes of friendship, love, greed and life, and focus on human strengths and human frailties.”

Sony Pictures Animation will make the film, with Sony Pictures ImageWorks tackling the CGI
